La Paz Students Win The National Junior Water Prize - The Stockholm International Water Institute holds an annual contest to select the best scientific research project on sustainable water management done by youth. The Swedish Embassy and the Mexican Academy of Sciences organized the National Junior Water Prize to encourage young people’s awareness and knowledge about the value and the situation of water. The prize aims at stimulating young people's interest in research on water conservation and at promoting a generation of leaders with a broad knowledge of the subjects.
This year, the prize winners to represent Mexico are students of our local CBTIS (Bachelor of Industrial Technology Center and Service) #230 in La Paz: Santa Michelle Salazar, Erick Alejandro Manriquez and Nadia Yunuen Díaz submitted a project titled "Teaching Module Of Environmental Conservation And Groundwater Recharge Of La Paz." On June 20th the CBTIS students were awarded the prize of $ 10,000 pesos for the teacher and $ 40,000 pesos for students presented at the Interactive Museum Universum in Mexico City, and they had dinner at the home of the Swedish Ambassador to Mexico. In late August they will travel to Stockholm, Sweden, where they will participate in World Water Week, sponsored and organized by the Stockholm International Water Institute, www.siwi.org/. World Water Week has been the annual focal point for the world's water problems since 1991.
Niparajá AC, www.niparaja.org, is very proud of the award and participation of these young people, whom we have supported since the end of 2010 through training, materials and labor. Water is one of the main environmental and social challenges in the Baja California Peninsula. We mainly focus in promoting a more sustainable water management. The first phase of this program aims to promote an integrated management of the watershed of La Paz. Niparajá AC programs are supported with the invaluable help of partners, foundations, local communities, government and private institutions, which share our love of nature. You can be part of these efforts! - Gabriel Patrón, www.niparaja.org, 612 122 1171, La Paz

Malware May Knock Thousands Off Internet On Monday - In the March 06, 2012 issue of the Baja Western Onion, www.bajawesternonion.com/issues/120306.html, we reported on the "DNSChanger Virus," which had infected thousands of computers around the world. The FBI and Interpol arrested several individuals and confiscated the Internet servers used to compromise infected computers. They replaced the rogue servers temporarily to avoid knocking people off the Internet. But this was intended as a temporary measure to allow owners time to clean the virus from their computers. These replacement servers are scheduled to taken offline on Monday. Any computers which are still infected with this virus on Monday will lose their ability to connect to the Internet. Here is a link to an Associated Press article from yesterday: Malware May Knock Thousands Off Internet On Monday. Following are some exerpts from the article:
According to the FBI, the number of computers that probably are infected is more than 277,000 worldwide, down from about 360,000 in April. About 64,000 still-infected computers are probably in the United States...To see if your computer is infected, you may want to check it before Monday here: www.dns-ok.us. if the image displayed is red, then your computer is infected by the DNSChanger virus. NOTE: This site is intended to detect only the DNSChanger virus. It is not a complete virus scan, and a green image does not mean your computer is free of other viruses. If your computer is infected, here is information on how to fix the problem: www.dcwg.org/fix/ -
