News and Events, Questions and Answers

The Baja Walk Reaches Southern Baja Despite Problems - Mexico, Vizcaino, Baja California Sur, June 10, 2012 – John and Rachel Pack set out to circumnavigate the Baja peninsula during the summer, in 100 days or less. The trek would cross some the world’s toughest terrain, during the hottest time of the year. On May 12, 2012, they left San Felipe, Baja and now 30 days and 292 miles (469km) later, they have overcome many challenges and crossed into southern Baja. The walk is to bring awareness to the needs of various Baja charities that fight enormous challenges of their own during the summer months. Although they have come this far, the remaining distance may prove to be the toughest and most difficult yet.

The Packs have been averaging 12-18 miles (19-29 km) per day, carrying between 5-8 gallons (19-30 liters) of water, and two weeks of food. The weight of the wagon is between 150-200lbs. (68-90kg). Their goal is to reach Rosarito Beach, in time for the Baja Blues Fest (www.bajabluesfest.com) August 25; however, with the injuries and delays, they now have the challenge of making up lost time. "We only have 100 days, so we hope to pick up the pace, and no matter what, we absolutely have to make it to Cabo San Lucas and then back to Todos Santos and Hogar del Ninos, an orphanage that are on their own and need help," John explains, "and that is still nearly 600 miles away."

Last year, John and Rachel Pack produced the Baja Love Ride (www.bajaloveride.com) cycling event, to bring awareness to the needs of Children in Baja California. Their desire this year with the Baja Walk is to bring awareness to the needs of children, in addition to other important causes: Alma Humanitaria, A.C., Los Barriles - Hogar Del Nino, Todos Santos – Voluntarios Para Los Animales Indigentes Y Vulnerables, San Felipe - Animalandia, Loreto – Casa De Fe Orfanato, San Felipe - Voluntarios Sin Límites, San Felipe - Club De Ninos Y Ninas De Rosarito, Rosarito Beach - Fundación Ayuda Niños La Paz, A.C. La Paz - Tortuga Proyecto De Marcado De Loreto, Loreto.

The Baja Walk is sponsored by Playa de Oro Development in San Felipe, Baja California, Click-on in Puerto Nuevo, Baja California, Portland Running Company in Portland, Oregon, Baja Bound Insurance in San Diego, California and many other generous companies and individuals. The Charities: bajagoodlife.com/baja-100-day-challenge/baja-charity-challenges. The Sponsors: bajagoodlife.com/baja-100-day-challenge/baja-walk-sponsors. Still More G20 Info Corrections - Thank you for creating and printing the changes per Julio Camarena's interview. However, this line is incorrect:
"This means that the popular snorkeling spots like Santa Maria, Chileno Bay & surf spots like El Tule, Acapulquito, the Rock & Zippers will not be accessible from the 15th until the 20th."
Lic. Camarena clearly stated in the interview that beach restrictions only apply to the official host hotels and Barcelo/El Grand Faro. Lic. C said that the above beaches/surf spots and Medano Beach will not be affected and that all other beaches will be open unless they are at a host resort. Thanks! - Sabrina

Free To A Good Home - 2 kombucha mushrooms and 1/2 cup of water kefir grains. Pescadero. - Becky, bajabeck [- at -] gmail.com, 612-143-7542

Flying Your Pets Update - For more information regarding flying your pets in and out of Mexico in airline cabins, you can visit this handy website: http://www.thepetitionsite.com/897/179/293/in-cabin-airline-pet-travel-to-mexico/. - Courtesy Baja Pony Express.
I recently had 2 people translate and provide a synopsis of the Mexican government Directives that apply to the 'no pets in cabin' policy which the airlines have just implemented. Both translators agreed on the basic gist of the document:
International Travel of Pets - Mexico has this compulsory Circular CO AV-07.8/07 which they have now started to enforce. It states that every licensee or permittee who operates or intends to operate services to the public passenger transportation in Mexico must comply with the requirements of this Compulsory Circular. Aircraft operators must also comply with the requirements of this Compulsory Circular according to the type of operation and characteristics of their aircraft. As I read this, this includes all flights in Mexico whether international or not.

It states that all pets traveling to Mexico effective immediately until further notice, all dogs and/or cats must travel in a kennel and be placed in the aircraft cargo hold. Also they are required to have a Health Certificate. The only exception in Mexico for a live animals in the passenger cabin is in the case of a service animal, like a guide dog. Travelers with three or more pets are subject to additional importation fees of approximately $1,600 pesos (approximately $150 USD) as mandated by the SAGARPA (Secretary of Agriculture, Livestock Production, Rural Development, Fishery and Food). The payment can be paid online or at a Mexican bank. Upon arrival with three or more pets, Customs will direct you to the cargo area where the required commercial importation process takes place. The clearance may require a customs broker.
The bottom line is there's no point in petitioning the airlines; they are simply following Mexican federal law. As foreigners in Mexico, there are limits to what we can do to try and influence the government on this policy, but we are investigating what, if anything, we can legally do. Anyone who would like a copy of the Directives (in Spanish) can contact me by email at hamiltos12 [- at -] yahoo.com - Sheryl Hamilton.

Worried About Our Friend Santos "The Singer" - He is in the "Important People of Todos Santos" book, and no one I know can tell me how he is doing! We are concerned as we heard he had a stroke and he is not picking up his phone. We are now living in Cabo and will go visit him on our day off but, in the meanwhile, anyone can please tell us how he is doing. He has been through some really rough times and he is such a smart and sweet person. Please, someone has to know something! sethanabel [- at -] hotmail.com

Baja Blues Fest Rosarito Beach - On Saturday August 25, 2012, Rosarito Beach, Baja California and the Pacific Ocean will be the backdrop of the highly anticipated Baja Blues Fest at the Historic Rosarito Beach Hotel. This event, world-class blues music and regional art come together to create an experience not to be missed.

The Baja Blues Fest will bring bands together to celebrate music and help the needs of others. Celebrating the world of blues, the forbearer of Rock 'n' Roll, and is an event that is all about “Helping Children with the Blues”. All proceeds from the event will be donated to local charities that rely on donations to carry out their activity. Any person attending this amazing event will automatically contribute to the cause by purchasing a ticket which costs $20 if paid in advance and $25 if purchased on location. Visit the official website of the event www.bajabluesfest.com for tickets, travel and lodging information.

The event will take place at the historic and beautiful Rosarito Beach Hotel, between 10AM – 7PM, with food and beverages available on site. The organizers are the Baja Blues Fest Organization (www.bajabluesfest.com) and Baja Good Life Club (www.bajagoodlifeclub.com). About 150+ volunteers are needed to put this event together, and the community is encouraged to participate by volunteering.

The Baja Blues Fest Organization operates with the sole purpose of assisting the humanitarian needs of local children’s organizations. Their team of dedicated individuals is working diligently to bring support and unconditional compassion to the less privileged in Baja. Even with all their work, and the help of so many volunteers, none of this is possible without sponsors; so if you are a business or individual that would like to make a difference in a child’s life, while bringing the joy of music and art to all, please sponsor the Baja Blues Fest. Mexico recently changed the rabies policy. We flew into SJD In October and were asked to present health certificates for our dog and cat. They registered the animals and presented me with papers welcoming them into Mexico. The person who helped us also told me that the policy for rabies had changed in Mexico from a shot each year had changed to a shot every three years, just like in the USA.
