Needs At The Hogar - The staff of Todos Santos’ Hogar del Nino sincerely appreciates your donations, helping them to help the children. Currently the hogar is in need of some basics: toilet paper, shampoo, lotion, and belts for the children’s school uniforms. Food donations are always welcome, especially fresh fruits and vegetables, eggs and milk. - Diane Phillips, hogardelninoac [- at -] hotmail.com, padrinoproject.com, 612-145-0584 , Todos Santos

Semana Santa This Week - Semana Santa is one of the two most important Catholic holidays in Mexico along with Christmas. Throughout the country there will be parades, Mass, and usually fireworks. Semana Santa began with Palm Sunday this last weekend and will continue through this coming Easter Sunday, April 08. Article about Semana Santa on Baja Insider here: www.bajainsider.com/baja-life/holidays/semanasantamexico.htm. Article about Semana Santa on Wikipedia here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Semana_Santa. Here are some of the Easter events planned for this week in Todos Santos, mostly taking place in and around the Catholic Church:
Monday April 2 to Wed April 4 - 9:00-6:00 Children's Easter.
Thursday, April 5, Jueves Santo - Triumphal entry march from plaza to the church with palm branches, apostles, Jesus, all walking across the street to the Mass at 6:30 PM.
Friday, April 6, Viernes Santo - 12:00 Meditation on the last words of Christ - 6:00 PM Rosary -7:00 PM The March of Silence (in town).
Saturday, April 7, Sabado Santo - 8:00 PM, late night blowout celebration. Fireworks, people being baptized, people joining the Church. Internal Church Plaza. The "all night" Saturday service starts at 8:00 PM and goes on for several hours.
Sunday, April 8, Domingo de Resurrection -12:00 Mass, after which a big celebration in the huerta at San Vicente. Bamboo grove by trailer park.
All church activities and services are 100% in Spanish so language could be an issue if you don't speak Spanish or you're not already Catholic.
Semana Santa is also the time when most of Mexico takes a "Spring Break" vacation and fills up the beaches. Many governmental services and businesses will be closed, or on limited hours of operation. This will extend all through this week and into next. Plan accordingly. Also, this can be a scary time for your animal companions due to all the noise. Noisy holidays are the busiest times of the year for animal shelters because of all the runaway pets. Here is some advice on how to keep your pets safe: 1stcarevets.com/have-you-prepared-your-pet-for-fireworks/ - The Baja Western Onion

Telephone Scam Alert - Last week I got a call from a supposed long-lost cousin who proceeds to make me guess which cousin he is. Well, of course, the guessing game gives him a name. So now I think I'm speaking with my cousin, who says he got my number from grandma and found out we're in La Paz. He tells me he's in Tijuana on his way down the Baja and could he come for a visit? Well "of course," I say. Keep in mind that I have not spoken to this cousin in years so voice recognition failed me. He then tells me he's going to buy a Mexican cell phone, because his US cell phone will soon lose signal. I tell him to get a Movistar cell phone and to put 200 pesos on it. He says he'll call when he has his new cell phone #. He calls after a bit to tell me he has his new phone but he's still using his old cell because he didn't understand how to buy minutes for his new phone. I tell him to go to any Oxxo. He replies that he's already outside town and would I be so kind as to go to an Oxxo for him and put 500.00 pesos on his new phone # and he'll pay me back as soon as he gets to La Paz. Now, slightly annoyed at my cousin, I figure I'll do this as soon as convenient.

About an hour later, I receive another call from my now-frantic cousin because he's been in an accident. He explains he's using a bystander's cell phone to call, because his US phone now has no signal, and he has no minutes on his Mexican cell phone. He presses me to put some minutes on his phone so he can give me more detail about his situation. I panic and buy 500 pesos on his cell. He calls again to say they won't let him leave the scene until he pays $3,000 US for damages. He only has some traveler's checks and about 1,000 US. They want the money transferred into a bank account before allowing him to leave. Now bells and whistles go off, and I realize I'm being scammed. So I ask my supposed cousin, what his dad's first name is? He replies, "what you don't believe me?" I repeat, just tell me your dad's first name? He attempts to give me a name and gets it wrong.

I hang up knowing I just got scammed for 500 pesos and they were attempting to scam me for more, just by playing on my emotions. If memory serves, this is not a new scam, but when emotions and family get mixed in, you tend to let your guard down. I suggest anyone who gets a call like this to simply call the real family member's home phone before you lose any cash. I hope my error will save anyone else from reacting on emotion, which is what these scammers rely upon. - Name Withheld By Request

Computer Virus Alert - Courtesy Baja Pony Express - There has been another rash of Virus attacks to some local computers. The worst of the bunch act like a legitimate virus scan. They even use Microsoft Logos and visual representations of an actual scan. At the end of the "make believe" scan, the program advises you that your computer has a significant number of viruses and for a mere $30, they can remove those viruses. If you see this scan, Do Not Proceed And Do Not Follow their instruction! If you're a rookie, shutdown the computer.

The authors of the virus are former Soviet countries that are trying to scam your credit card. The Virus is set to accept your credit card, remain dormant for 3 months then reactivate. You feed it another $30 and so on. The viruses are not detected nor stopped by most anti-virus programs. I'm working on a neighbors computer now that had an up-to-date McAfee Anti-virus Program. The virus locks you out of the internet, locks you out of all normal removal tools and prevents installation of programs to fight it. In some cases, cleaning the virus may require a reformat and re-install of the entire operating system.

Where do the viruses come from? Great question and I'm glad you asked. A dear friend of 82 was searching for receipts for turkeys on line and got a hit - so it can come from a variety of seemingly harmless sources. If your a geek, cross platform contamination from servers hosting a variety of web sites including the bad guys sites. - The Computer Guy (thecomputerguy [- at -] usa.com), Los Barriles
