Dia De La Bandera - Flag Day in Mexico - Friday, Feb. 24, Mexico will celebrate Dia De La Bandera, the "Day of The Flag." Día de la Bandera is a national holiday in Mexico. Flag Day is celebrated every year on February 24 since its implementation in 1937. It was established by the President of Mexico, General Lázaro Cárdenas, before the monument to General Vicente Guerrero, first to pledge allegiance to the Mexican flag on March 12, 1821.
When the Pledge is recited, it is customary to salute the flag with the raised arm Bellamy Salute while speaking. When the flag is being paraded, the arm is held across the chest, palm parallel to the ground. (Source: Wikipedia) -
Bike/Pedestrian Lane In Road Paving Plans! - Hi everyone. I know this meeting was already mentioned in the last BWO but I just wanted to add an important stipulation for the plans to pave the Las Playitas road: A bike/pedestrian lane! If you support this idea it would be good to show up for the meeting and voice your opinion/questions to the delegado. Monday, February 13, at La Esquina at 5:00 p.m. - Marimar, hola [- at -] laesquinats.com, 612-145-0851, Todos Santos
3 Cheers For Environmass! - As a long time resident of this community who has seen recycling programs come and go, it’s been irksome to read the occasional posting questioning Environmass’ integrity, cleanliness and so forth. It was also sad to read the Environmass posting in early January mentioning the garbage problems they’ve faced and the new limitations on what will be accepted. I have no affiliation with this organization nor do I have anything to gain by posting this announcement. I simply feel compelled to recognize the efforts of this grassroots group who is so clearly no-nonsense and altruistic.
When I last dropped-off this summer, the guy manning the project that day was driving from San Jose (!!!) each week to deal with our recycling. I also understand this very accessible location in Todos Santos is generously provided by a good-hearted ecologically minded longtime resident of this community. Recycling is not a pretty endeavor, any way you pile it, but especially not in rural Mexico where there are no color coded bins thoughtfully placed on street corners, no trucks collecting the unsightly before dawn. What I’ve seen of Environmass is individuals armored with just gloves who dig-in up to their armpits with gusto, sifting through our recyclables with efficiency and care, enthusiasm and a smile. There are always the pessimists in the world who rather doubt from a far then actually take part and see if they can help improve upon it.
The thing I find most irritating about this unwarranted criticism is Environmass has the answers. You want to know where you’re plastic is going? They tell you specifically. You want to know how many tons of paper have been moved and to where? They know exactly. My experience has been nothing short of individuals eager to tell you about their program; the hiccups and changes, the growth and successes. The last time I was there dropping off 6 months worth of recyclables, where I gave 70 pesos instead of the suggested 50, I received an emphatic, "Thank you so much, we really appreciate your support." And, as I walked away he said "Oh, and be sure to check out our website to learn more." So from one thankful resident here who appreciates the selfless efforts of those involved in this project, a hearty three cheers for Environmass! - Jennifer Rosen, Todos Santos
Hiking Partner(s) Wanted To Sierra De La Laguna - I am a 60-year-old woman, looking to hike to Picacho, the beautiful peak in La Sierra de la Laguna, above Todos Santos. You need to have your own backpacking gear, and be moderately fit. We will hike 4-5 hours per day, and it's steep. I'm not into speed, but want to enjoy the incredibly different ecosystem of pine and oak forests at the top. Nights will be cooler up there at 6000 ft. We can go for two nights and three days, or spend another day. I'm available now until Saturday, Feb. 18. - Susan Holvenstot, cvec17 [- at -] hotmail.com, Pescadero
