Back-to-School Help Needed - The Hogar del Niño, our local orphanage, relies on the community for support as this home is not funded by the government. Please stop by to meet Joel and Alicia Hernandez and their staff of volunteers who currently care for 23 boys and girls, mostly placed by DIF. Some of the children are literal orphans while others are in need of protective care.

The Hogar del Niño is located north of Todos Santos on a dirt road just off the highway before the Pemex. If you would like to help, cash donations are always in need. Donating online is easy at www.hogardelnino.org.mx. The hogar has an ongoing need for foods such as meats, eggs, and fresh fruit and vegetables. If you would like to provide meals on a monthly basis, contact the meal coordinator, Lisa Welch. Her email is: lwelsch [ - a t - ] cbriveras.com.

Lastly, school supplies are needed as school begins in a few weeks. The kids need backpacks, pencils, erasers, colored pencils, notebooks of all kinds, and large sheets of white poster board. They could also use socks and school shoes. Your help is both needed and appreciated. If you are making an online cash donation and you want to designate, for example, shoes, you can email hogardelninoac [ - a t - ] hotmail.com to inform them. Thank you for your help. - Joel Hernandez, hogardelninoac [ - a t - ] hotmail.com, www.hogardelnino.org.mx, 612-145-0584 , Baja California Sur

Great Opportunity To Support Local Conservation Group - Niparajá, the La Paz-based, not-for-profit, grassroots conservation group has launched its new online newsletter, "La Pitahaya - Boletín de Niparajá," as part of effort to expand its grassroots base of support. The newsletter includes a "no cost to join" membership option. (U.S. citizens can also support Niparaja with a tax-deductible donation through Niparaja's US-based partner, the International Community Foundation).

Niparaja recently celebrated its 20th anniversary in its mission to protect the special lands and waters that make Baja Sur unique. One exciting new campaign is the permanent protection of the Sierras La Giganta and Guadalupe (similar to our other national parks) to preserve the landscape and way of live of the ranchero communities in the sierras. The campaign has developed a broad base of support from local residents and is now focused at the national level. A new book on the sierras was recently published, written by award-winning and part-time resident Bruce Berger (who also sites on the Niparaja board of directors) and local photographer, Miguel Ángel de la Cueva. Check for availability in your local bookstore or purchase directly from Niparajá.

As many of you know, Niparaja has helped with many of our local conservation success stories (including the protected areas of Espiritu Santo National Park and Balandra Bay) as well as partnering with local conservation groups, including the campaign to stop destructive gold mining in the sierras and develop sustainable fishing practices in the Gulf and Magdalena Bay.

To learn more about Niparajá, check out our revamped website. Please join! It's a great way to become part of the growing conservation movement in Baja Sur and to stay informed of local issues. If you have specific questions about Niparaja, or of our conservation projects contact us. - Roberto López Espinosa De Los Monteros, contacto [ - a t - ] niparaja.org, www.niparaja.org, 612-122-1171, La Paz

New Treatment For Scorpion Stings - Courtesy Baja Pony Express - The Food and Drug Administration has approved the first treatment especially for the Centruroides scorpion- the nasty critter from the southwest. The new treatment - called Anascorp- was fast-tracked because there simply wasn't adequate treatment available before its arrival. According to Karen Midthun, M.D. in charge of the FDA's Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research, Anascorp provides "a new treatment for children and adults, designed specifically for scorpion stings." In infants and children, Dr. Midthun says, "scorpion stings can be fatal."

Severe stings can trigger loss of muscle control, convulsions, and breathing difficulties that had previously required deep sedation and intensive hospital care. It was tested, fittingly, in Arizona in 2004 and found to be effective in treating the stings of the bark scorpion. Also known as the Arizona bark scorpion, it's the most poisonous scorpion in the U.S.

The results were certainly encouraging. Children with extreme reactions normally faced lengthy stays in intensive care. When treated with Anascorp, researchers found patient symptoms disappeared after a few hours in the emergency room, no hospital stay required.

The best way to minimize the chances of getting stung is to know where to be on the alert for scorpions. They're attracted to dark, moist places. That means you should be careful around rocks, wood, loose tree barks, or other stuff laying on the ground that could provide a cool, moist hideout. Landscapers are particularly at risk for scorpions, along with hornets, bumblebees, snakes and most of the other nasties of summer.

If you're unlucky enough to have an unfortunate encounter with one, here are some simple things you can do: clean the site with soap and water, apply a cool compress, elevate the affected limb to the same level as your heart, and take aspirin or acetaminophen as needed for mild discomfort.

As with any sting, be especially aware of any sort of breathing difficulty. If there's any question about breathing, don't risk it - head to a medical facility immediately. - The Baja Western Onion

Re: FBAR Filing Requirements - Don't Panic - Actually, you might want to panic if you have made money offshore and haven't reported it. But if you're like me and just move funds into a Mexican bank to pay bills, I don't think you have a problem. Even if you put your house purchase price into an account on the way to closing the purchase, or for some other reason had a balance over $10K for a day or more, I still don't think you have a problem. The key to not whether you have a problem or not is whether you have reported all sources of income on your tax returns. $500K from the US to Banorte and then to your seller isn't income. If you fit this description, then I think the most you need to do is file FBARs for prior years, and to refile any tax return in which you didn't submit a schedule B that indicates in part III that you do indeed have a foreign bank account. Much has been written about FBAR filing, and it is hard to dig out of all the noise that the key is whether you've avoided tax or not. See this page:

www.greenbacktaxservices.com/resources/blog/usexpatsfbaroffshorevoluntarydisclosure/

And in particular note this paragraph about the voluntary disclosure program (for which the letter you are invited to fill out is addressed to "criminal investigations division", for criminy's sake):

If you have been filing your US tax returns, but have not filed the Foreign Bank Account Form (FBAR- Form TD F 90-22.1.) then you may not need to worry about the voluntary disclosure. The purpose of the voluntary disclosure is to provide a way for individuals who have not been reporting their taxable income to disclose this income and avoid criminal prosecution. So, if you have not been reporting your foreign bank accounts via the FBAR form, but have paid tax on any income from these accounts then you should file the delinquent FBAR forms along with a statement saying why the reports are late, but in all likelihood you do not need to partake in the voluntary disclosure program.
So. The scary stuff is about income. Ask your tax guy, but don't freak out unless he tells you to. - Tom Gafford

The Tea Party Has Taken Our Dog Allowance. - This is affecting our care of three wonderful, homeless dogs living at Punta Lobos. Twice a week Maryann and I have taken food and water to Carlos who cares for these dogs. Carlos became ill several weeks ago and is in a hospital in La Paz, perhaps not to return. This means almost daily trips for us to the beach and, of course, the continued expense of feeding the dogs.

We need bags of dog food, volunteers to make an occasional trip to the beach, or foster homes for three sweet, healthy adult dogs. As of today there is a new dog there, pink and raw with mange. We can fix that, but we are feeling overwhelmed and hope for some support from other Tiny Towners. Any suggestions are welcome (except euthanasia, which we hope to avoid). Gracias. Pam Cobb 612-102-7983 and Maryann Douglas 145-0791. - Pam, senoracobb [ - a t - ] yahoo.com

He never strays but is very friendly and has no collar. If you see him, please call me at 612-102-9135. Reward! - Helen Bay, helenbaysandbar [ - a t - ] gmail.com, 612-102-9135, Pescadero

<<<<- Dog Lost In Pescadero - A very friendly dog called Maya was lost in San Pedrito beach in Pescadero. It happened during fireworks on the beach on July 27th in the late evening. Unfortunately, she didn't have her collar with a tag on, only a white anti-flea collar. She looks like a pit bull-ridgeback mix, light brown color with a white spot on her chest and has a black muzzle. She is one of two dogs (sisters) who have never been separated before. We all miss her a lot. If you seen her or adopted her by mistake, please contact us as soon as possible. - Lee And Lesia lpc_loki [ - a t - ] yahoo.co.uk, 612-157-2533, Pescadero
