Comments, Questions and Answers

Great Mechanic To Recommend - We have just had another great experience with Miguel, an expert mechanic in La Paz, who is happy to come down to the Todos/Pescadero area to do work as well. He has totally dialed in and cleaned our Subaru outback which had a check engine light on. His prices are unbeatable; he is honest and kind. He lent us his car to do errands while he worked on ours. He speaks English very well as he was a mechanic in San Diego for years. He's back and forth to the states to see his kid and can bring stuff down periodically. His number is 612 118 6673. Enjoy! Chloe and Liam - Chloe Conger, liamandchloe [-at-] gmail.com

Mountain Bike Single Track In Las Tunas - I found several miles of great single track and some more that needs a little clearing. A few rocks and shrubs. Kudos to whoever cleared the bottom part. If anyone is interested meet me at the blue tractor 8:30 Friday morning. Slime or some kind of thorn protection is recommended. - Michael Scannell, daiksan [-at-] yahoo.com, 612 143 3504

Re. Scan Package For Inner Mexico Mailing - The reason you need to go to customs is because we are in a "free zone". You can also take your packages to La Paz and pass them through customs there. I send all of my package from La Paz but I never use the postal service. Multipack, Estafeta, Red pack and UPS all service the mainland with quick, inexpencive, and reliable service. This is not always true with the post office. In La Paz Customs (Aduana)is found 3 blocks south of Forajdores on 5 de Febrero. Left hand side. Take your package open, with tape. They will check it ask you to close it and then stamp it. This service is free. You then can take it to which ever postal service you like. Hope this helps, Daphna -Arte La Xoma artelaxoma [-at-] hotmail.com, 145-0608

Orchids Por Favor - Does anyone know where I can purchase specialty orchids in Baja? - Bobbi Mcelravey, bobbimc1 [-at-] gmail.com, 530-613-6199US, Elias Calles

Air Conditioning - Mini Splits - I am looking to put air conditioning into my casita in Pescadero. I am looking for information for an installer and or units installed. Has anyone recently put in? Did you purchase in La Paz or CSL. Thanks Brian - Brian Knott, elskel [-at-] aol.com, 949-422-2090

Airport Parking - I've located a different car storage option that could be considered for the convenience of having the car at the San Jose airport. It's a walled compound that has an auto shop that is honest. He speaks good English. It's $40.00 per month and that is guaranteed for four years. Monthly is ok if you are in the US for summer. This includes pick up and delivery at no charge, I give a small tip. If you fly in or out on Sunday there is an extra charge as he is closed and likes to be with his family. If he has to leave them, he charges us extra and takes them out to dinner. For a one time fee of $200.00 he will build covered parking for us. Also because it's a shop, it would be easy to have any maintenance or repair issues dealt with while we're gone. His name is Ivan Enriquez, and his numbers are 624-121-3557 and 624 126-4883. - Roy Stock, roy [-at-] bajadirt.com,

Bridges Out In Northern Baja - I drove from San Diego to Todos Santos Jan. 25-26, and I can report that at that time major bridges were washed out in San Vicente, Vicente Guerrero, and El Rosario. I drove two rivers in my Ford Explorer 4x4 and paid 200P for tractor tow across the other. Efforts were brewing to bybass the bridges with earthen works but I can't report on results. Also, resultant gas shortages in Central Baja. Santa Rosalia Ferry is a good option! - Brad Kahland, bmkahland [-at-] gmail.com

Just Drove Down From San Diego. - Piece of cake. All clear. - Sylvia St.clair, Baja California Sur

Theft Warning - We had our battery stolen from our car this weekend. We are guests at Las Casitas and our car was parked directly in front of our casita and the entrance gate. The car was locked. - Karen Alvarado, tootsiebiggirl [-at-] hotmail.com, Todos Santos

Thinking Of Building? - First take time to know our community and the sensitive environmental conditions of our area. Please, no building on the dunes or in the oasis areas; no vehicles on the dunes or beaches (which is against Mexican federal laws). Help us preserve the natural beauty of Southern Baja California. ARTOSAN A.C., a non-profit organization devoted to the promotion of the arts and preservation of the environment. - , Todos Santos

Gasoline Situation In TS And Area - Last year I did a extensive research project into whether we were getting what we paid for at the various Pemex stations in TS, Pescadero, La Paz, Cabo, and Los Bariles. Two things got me started; One was a comment by a lady in TS as to the poor fuel economy she was getting. The other was a the stations at La Paz Los Bariles and north of El Centenario which advertised "Litros completos" as something special. I realized that a fast and accurate and repeatable method was to buy "veinte litros" and then to weigh it with a good quality digital bathroom scale I had. Some research indicated that 20 litres in my plastic gas can should weigh very close to 34.5 lbs on my scale. Last years test verified that the station that were advertising "Litros Completos" in fact were!!! And all the stations in there area were to (no surprise really). The Ejido gas station just north of TS was only a little "light" at about 4-5%. The station in TS was the most light varying from 18% to about 9% and averaging about 12%. To put this in context, if they did 200 sales of 50 litres each it would amount to about US$1,000,000.00 over a 3 year period of "extra profit" to the station franchisee. Pescadero was less ambitious at about 9% light (both pump islands were the same. It is educational when you realize that every station has a carefully calibrated test tube to verify there pump's accuracy. There is a certain station in LaPaz that delivers "litros completos y pocito mas" and my test verifies this claim of there's.

Anyway this year I decided to see what the situation was. was pleased to see that the station north of TS in fact now delivers "litros completos" (right about 34.4-34.5 lbs) The station in town seems to be at about 9% light. Interestingly the same as Pescadero. If they did the same 200 sales of 50 litres each it would take more than 4 years to achieve US$1,000.000.00 in extra profit. In the current economic situation that is not likely. Anyway i hope you find this entertaining. What pleased me the most is exposing this can cause a change is illustrated by the station north of TS and the stations in La Paz that all seem to be spot on. -

Movie Night At Buena Vida Saturday - This Saturday we will be showing the movie Up In The Air. It has been nominated for four Oscars including Best Picture, Best Actor (George Clooney) and so on...

Ryan Bingham's job is to fire people from theirs. The anguish, hostility, and despair of his "clients" has left him falsely compassionate, living out of a suitcase, and loving every second of it. When his boss hires arrogant young Natalie, she develops a method of video conferencing that will allow termination without ever leaving the office - essentially threatening the existence Ryan so cherishes. Determined to show the naive girl the error of her logic, Ryan takes her on one of his cross country firing expeditions, but as she starts to realize the disheartening realities of her profession, he begins to see the downfalls to his way of life.
We will start the movie at 7:00pm. We will be offering our normal dinner menu as well as our Special for the night "Oven Braised Short Ribs and Gorgonzola Polenta". We will be open at 5:00 PM so please come early to get your seat. I am excited to be bringing movie night back. - Jessie Rutowski, jessierutowski [-at-] gmail.com, 612-348-8178

Sweetest Puppy Anywhere Needs Home! - A few days ago an adorable little puppy started hanging out outside our rented casita. She is clearly homeless, and yet is one of the coolest dogs I have ever met. She has big brown eyes, and a nice golden brown coat with black trim. She is gentle, affectionate, playful, and also very mellow - not hyper. Elegant proportions. A fast learner, (she already knows sit and stay, and is great with my four year old daughter.) I am so impressed with her, I would bring her home to NYC myself, except we already have one dog in a small apartment. I've already taken her to the vet -- she is five months old, 8 kilos, has been immunized and is generally healthy. I've arranged for her to be spayed next week -- so, if you have been considering adopting a dog, and would like to bring a sweet little soul into your life -- she is ready to go!! (We've been calling her HoneyPenny.) Please e-mail or call, I can't keep her here for long. THANK YOU! - Ann Pibal, annpibal [-at-] earthlink.net, 6121441656 or 6121441672, Todos Santos

Lost Dog - Please help us find our dog! There was an accident on Sunday, January 3rd around 2 pm at KM 224 1/2 on highway 1, 55 km north of the Bahia Los Angeles turn off at Punta Prieta. Our dog was inside the van that rolled and when he got out he ran off into the desert and we were unable to find him after searching hours and days.
His name is "Pickle". He is a tan lab/great dane mix. He is very Friendly, but I'm sure very scared. He was wearing a collar with a name tag that had our numbers on it; both U.S. and Mexico. He was last seen by a witness, running west into the desert at km 224 1/2.

The reward is currently $300 usd, but I am willing to do what it takes to get my sweet boy back.
If anyone has seen him or knows of anything, please let me know.
