Did You Lose A Colorado License Plate? - Well, I just might have it. Found on the Las Playitas road near Super Mercado Del Sol II in El Otro Lado. Contact me to identify it and it's yours again. - Darryl, darrylrgunter [-at-], 612 155 3391, Todos Santos

AH1N1 Vaccine Update/BCS (Courtesy La Paz Gringos) - Here is the translation on 5 issues:

  1. Seasonal influenza vaccine is available in BCS but has no effect on AH1N1.
  2. The AH1N1 vaccine will be available here in October. There will be a public notification when it is here.
  3. At this time, there is not a profile for those who should receive the AH1N1 but the common discussion is children, pregnant women, those with already compromised health conditions (especially respiratory) and healthcare workers. (WHO data)
  4. The vaccines will be available to all, including foreigners, and will be at no charge at public healthcare centers in BCS.
  5. Regarding getting both vaccines at the same time, there is no data to say Yes or No. Professionally, I would advise against it because if there is a negative reaction to either, or both, one would not know which one caused the reaction. A week apart would be more logical and advisable.

Dollars For Pesos At The Banks - I am hopefully heading back very soon and also would like to know if this is rumor or fact. If there is any truth to it, is it in specific areas, like smaller towns? Thanks Kevin - Mary Kevin Vineyard, m.vineyard [-at-], 972 839 7075, Pescadero

Banks - I am having some visitors from Europe arrive in October so called into Bancomer to find out about changing dollars. Bancomer advised me that it is an attempt to curtail money laundering and it is only US dollars that are affected. They will only change US$ if you have a US$ account with them but they will still change, over the counter, Canadian dollars, Euro and Sterling Pound, with the normal identification. They confirmed you will still be able to withdraw pesos from the ATM in the normal way. Hope this helps - Anita Harris, anitaharris2009 [-at-], 612 167 4935, Todos Santos

Trash Cans Stolen - Both of our large trash cans which were painted in the event held every year by the Palapa Society have been stolen from in front of our office (Milagro Real Estate), within the last two weeks. The last one was last year's first prize winner in the event. It is dark brown base color with kids and flowers and palm trees painted in small figures around the entire can. Anybody else having the same problem? - Dale Townsend, milagrodale [-at-], 512 145-0219, Todos Santos

New Customs Taxation - Crossing at Tecate: We crossed south bound Sept 19. New immigration officer transfered in from TJ, very helpful, good English. processed our FMT quickly then sent us across the street to the bank. Now the process goes downhill. That bank office cannot accept payment for the visa, directed to go "down the street 3 blocks to Bancomer." Directed to the "non-customer line." One hour wait to pay. In the meantime NEW Customs agents directed us to [parking area for inspection. Full trailer of housegoods (staying for 1 year) about $90.00 tax. Problem: could not leave truck and trailer there, no parking sorry. Drove around finally found Federal worker who allowed me to park while I go search for my wife at bank. About 3 hours for the process, used to be about 20 min. Roads good all the way, some areas a bit slow but no problems towing a 18' trailer, gas available. - Steven grasslandcattleco [-at-], 8172354004, Todos Santos

Pet Corner (Lost and Found pet articles will run for one week)

Traveling With Pets, The Sequel (Courtesy La Paz Gringos - There seems to be some confusion surrounding this subject, so let me tell you what I know. When I arrived from Canada on September 1 of this year, we were pulled aside at the La Paz airport because of my two dogs. The lady who was asking for documents wasn't part of the customs team; she was an officer of the "agriculture" department. Unfortunately, I don't speak Spanish so I did not know what she was asking for, but I do know that my vet-signed vaccination records and certifcates of health were not enough. She spent a good half hour on the phone to someone before we were allowed to go through. I have no idea who she called or why they finally cleared my dogs. A couple weeks later Dhorea Ryon of Baja Dogs was pulled aside by the same people at the La Paz airport. They recognized her and wanted her to tell 'everyone' here about the new regulations.

Dhorea's Spanish is a little better than mine, but not much, and what she got out of the conversation was that there is a new requirement for a separate document, on top of the vaccination records and certificate of health, verifying the dog does not have worms or parasites.

In an effort to get the correct and complete information out to everyone, we will do our best to contact someone at the agriculture department directly in the next few weeks and pass the information along when we get it. We will also ask if these regulations apply to all animals, if the regulations are the same whether you fly in or drive in, and if the regulations apply throughout Mexico or for some inexplicable reason, just at the La Paz airport. Anyone with additional information is welcome to add their 2c. Sheryl Owner /moderator of La Paz Gringos Proud Supporter of Baja Dogs - ,

Traveling With Pets, The Sequel II (Courtesy La Paz Gringos - This is the page about pets (cats and dogs) on the website of Sanasica, the federal agency that deals with animal health inspections, so it would apply Mexico-wide.
The following item has been added since I moved here with my cats in 2007. It's part of a list of information that must be shown in the animal's health papers:
In English (more or less, best I can do):
4. That the animal(s) have undergone a preventative treatment for parasites, or else that they are free of external and internal parasites; or present the original and a copy of a vaccination card that includes the preventative parasite treatment used.
There's an English page on the site about entering with pets, but the info isn't the same, and it tells you to "visit the next link" which doesn't appear. Hope this helps some!

More Travelling With Pets Info, Courtesy Baja Pony Express -

a. We came in via Alaska Airlines on September 15th with our very large dog. I had her shot records both from her vet here in Baja & a triplicate form signed by a vet in the States also verifying her shots, plus a letter certifying she was healthy & dated 4 days before our date of travel. (The health exam must be done within 5 days of travel on Alaska Airlines) I gave the papers & the letter to the Mexican agent at the San Jose airport, she read them & told us, "Welcome back to Mexico, have a nice day." She kept two of the American copies & the letter. I did not need the shot form from our Mexican vet, just the one filled out 4 days before we flew. It took less than 30 seconds. My dog has had all of her immunizations, including kennel cough, but I think they are most interested in the rabies shot being current.

b. We just returned from cabo pulmo on Sept.11 one week after the hurricane. We drove down from central Calif. August 24th going though the border at Tecate, with our dog Susie Q. As always i get a rabies certificate and a certificate of health from the Vet that is within 5 days of crossing the border. We got a green light in Tecate this year and last year we got a red light on both occasions we were never asked about our dog or papers for the dog. Maybe it was because she is just to cute?? we drove down stayed in Guerrero Negro and then to Los Barriles to pick up a trailer in storage and proceeded to castillo de arena. Driving home was also just fine besides going though all the construction and the mess from the hurricane which was just awful in Mulege and Santa Rosailia. We have never experienced any kind of problems on our trips , everyone has always been extremely nice and helpful. Your vet will tell you just what you need. We will return again next year. Pete and Lorinda rindyd [-at-]

c. My husband and I fly our cat down with us to Los Barriles every November for the winter, the regs I believe are the same, you require a Vet certicate saying that the cat is healthy and has a current rabies vaccine showing the lot number, I take several copies because Mexico quite often wants to keep a copy. This should be obtained 4-5 days prior to departure. Same for return, we use Vet in LB. Have not had any issues in 10 years...driving or flying...good luck, safe travels, Joan and Ray
