Las Tunas Beach Clean Up Results - A gazillion thanks to all who showed up last Saturday to clean up the bocana. In about an hour the beach was once again pristine. For all of you who didn't have the opportunity to join worries. Keep your eyes peeled for the next beach clean up. We're on a mission! - Marsha Dahlquist, Todos Santos

Exposed Email Addresses - It's come to our attention that copies of some issues of the Baja Western Onion Email Newsletter have been reprinted on various web sites. We appreciate the additional coverage but ask that all Email addresses in the Baja Western Onion that are exposed in this way on public web pages be altered or removed so that they can't be picked up by "Spam 'Bots".

As a general rule, we never post copies of the Baja Western Onion Email Newsletter on any web site, including our own, without first altering the E mail addresses to protect our submitters from receiving spam.

More info on this issue here:
Please note these Spam 'Bots can only harvest Email addresses from publicly displayed web pages, and not from the private Baja Western Onion Emails you receive in your inbox.

I've already written to some of these web sites and asked them to alter or remove the addresses, or remove the entire copy of the newsletter. Although it's outside of our control, we regret any spam problems these reprints might have caused. -

Arson! - Our home was deliberately and methodically burned down by someone. We settled in the otro lado(barrio el rio)20 years ago, when Todos was undiscovered, and life was sweet and safe. We improved our casa over the years and put our heart and souls into our little oasis. Now, it's all up in smoke and we are saddened beyond words. Why someone would do such a dispicable and cowardly crime we have no idea. The judiciales have been informed and are investigating but catching the culprits may prove difficult because no one is talking. We hope they are caught so no one else's home gets burned down. Our dreams are up in flames but the good memories will last forever! Adios. - Lynne & Frank( Pancho)Wiedemann, info [-at-], 208-665-0282, Todos Santos

Solar Panel Insurance - Can anyone provide a insurance reference for roof mounted panels. Have not bee successful in location a company that will include the roof mount as part of a Home Owners policy. - Rick Flood, rick.flood [-at-], US 760 604-0954, Pescadero

Documentary Film "HOME" by Yann Arthus Bertrand - Interesting online documentary film sent to me recently by Euva (thanks). Hauntingly beautiful scenery and music. More importantly, it's a graphic reminder of how our planet is in peril as never before in our history.

English Versión:

Versión Español:
Please note this is a very large video file. This is a 90 minute movie. Users on satellite Internet systems may wish to pass on this one. Interactive web site here:
From the Web Site:
HOME is an ode to the planet's beauty and its delicate harmony. Through the landscapes of 54 countries captured from above, Yann Arthus-Bertrand takes us on an unique journey all around the planet, to contemplate it and to understand it. But HOME is more than a documentary with a message, it is a magnificent movie in its own right. Every breathtaking shot shows the Earth - our Earth - as we have never seen it before. Every image shows the Earth's treasures we are destroying and all the wonders we can still preserve. "From the sky, there's less need for explanations". Our vision becomes more immediate, intuitive and emotional. HOME has an impact on anyone who sees it. It awakens in us the awareness that is needed to change the way we see the world. (HOME embraces the major ecological issues that confront us and shows how everything on our planet is interconnected.) Synopsis

In 200,000 years on Earth, humanity has upset the balance of the planet, established by nearly four billion years of evolution. The price to pay is high, but it is too late to be a pessimist: humanity has barely ten years to reverse the trend, become aware of the full extent of its spoliation of the Earth's riches and change its patterns of consumption.

Driving And Travel Insurance Tips For The Usa - Since the Onion has helped me out many times I thought I would pass on some tools that I have found useful when "vacationing" north across the border.

Many of us live primarily here in Baja Sur, but what do we do about the ridiculous auto and medical insurance situation in the US if we want to be responsible while travelling there? For those who are flying up via Alaska Airlines you will see upon checkout online an option for travel insurance via This is not just trip protection but also covers emergency medical costs up to $10,000 USD and emergency transportation back to Mexico of up to $50,000 USD.

Of course I have never made a claim but the cost is very low and given that my Mexico medical insurance does not cover me in the USA I have been using this option every time I fly.

For DRIVING up to the US I recently researched all options for driving a US-plated vehicle back to our summer place in Oregon, with my Mexican wife also occasionally driving, and I finally found a company that would cover the vehicle for just 3 months. After all why pay for a year if you are only driving there 2 or 3 months? The compnay was GEICO and the policy was less than $200.00 USD, liability only, but the key for me was that they will insure even with my wife driving under her Mexican license. That is what has worked for me, maybe others have found other options for those brief trips back across the border. - Jim Elfers, bajasurvey [-at-], Todos Santos

RE: Keep Baja Safe And Clean - I feel angry about the “Keep Baja Safe and Clean” comment in the last Onion. I have been coming to Todos Santos for more than five years and I try to come as often as I can. Why because it is one of the few places on Earth where I can feel safe walking the streets anytime of day or night, and yes, because of the warm loving, and friendly community. I am not aware of a single case of Swine flu in Todos or the Southern Baja.

In all my years in Baja I have never been robbed or treated badly. I was ticketed once for running the one and only stop light in town, my fault and the police were very polite. I just returned to California after 10 days in Todos Santos. Since crossing the border my car was searched for 20 minutes by home land security, I have been ticketed for a faulty headlight, and the smog and traffic are killing me. I can’t wait to get back to the great surf, clean air, fresh food and beautiful people of Todos Santos. - Bitsy Thomas, thomasbitsy [-at-], Todos Santos

Music/Entertainment News

Music Returns To The Hotel California??? - We all know that times are tough right now. The Hotel California has not had music for over a month. But they say it's time now to test the waters. The Hotel has hired Shawn and Cowboy to play music Saturday night, June 13th at 8PM. If things go well there could be more nights -- hey, we could get the band (Flashback) back together. Since the survival of most businesses here in the summer depend on us locals, we need to pull together. I know the guys would certainly love to get back to doing what they love best so come on out Saturday night and show your support for live music. It may be now or never. We look forward to seeing you there. - Bonnie O'neill, sunburntgringos [-at-], 612-134-0141, Todos Santos
