Spay Neuter Clinic - Many thanks again to all who participated in another successful spay/neuter clinic for the dogs and cats of Todos Santos. This one was a real bi-cultural event. The vets who were expected from the Aspen Animal Hospital on March 11 were snowed in, but Dr. Jorge Bravo from San Jose and Dr. Rafael Franzoni and his team of interns from LaPaz worked hard and performed 24 surgeries. Dr. Caroline Arrott and Dr. Julie Martin from Aspen arrived late in the day on the 11th and continued the work the following day, along with Dr. Franzoni's interns, and brought the total number of surgeries for the two-day clinic up to 62. With so many fewer abandoned animals in the area than we had years ago, most of the patients were brought in by Mexican families.
One of the most gratifying aspects of the clinic was to see how much the general health of the animals has improved over the years. With a few exceptions, we saw neither mange nor emaciation. Thanks again to all of those who volunteered. Special mention goes to the veterinary interns: Gisela Navarro, Christian Almeral, Gilberto Trasviño, Geraldo Ries, Margarita Barbosa and Manuel Beltran; and to the Aspen Animal Hospital vet techs: Katy Hack, Rosanna Yeaton, Tiffany Clausing and Jen. And as always: Angelique Schornstein, Susan McPherson, Barbara Perkins and Bloquera Solis - sine qua non - Janet Howey, Todos Santos

Thank You All - To all those who attended or donated your time, your money or gift certificates for the fundraiser dinner for Jennifer, we thank you. This event was a success in all facets, from raising funds to enjoying a great, traditional Mexican meal in a beautiful environment. Because of the success & great feeling enjoyed by everyone, we are thinking of making this an annual event. We can use this event as a great way to raise funds to have a continual scholarship program for the private school. There were many generous people that could not attend, that went out of there way to make donations from down here and up North. Also thanks to the following businesses for their generous gift certificates: Il Giardino, Ana San Sushi, Mary Lito Massages, La Polilla gallery & Estilo Salon by Philip Carreon. - Brenda Casillas, perla (-at-) ricardoamigo.com, 1450551
Two Abandoned Puppies - We had the misfortune early this week to be greeted by a box which contained 2 puppies which had been abandoned at our office door.
We got in touch with several people relating to the animal refuge and aid center here in TS. None of these people would take the puppies. Although Janet at the book store was kind enough to bring over front line and worm medicine. She offered to display them in a box at the bookstore for 3 hours a day once they were photogenic enough.
I questioned where all of the funds go for the animals if it was not to help out in these exact circumstances and take in these strays at "El Refugio". I was told that all funds go to the spay and neuter clinic. It appears that this really does not totally cover the needs of the animals in this area. I personally have given generously at many. many fundraising functions throughout the years , which I was assuming helped with the problem of abandoned animals as well. I guess you need to ask the pertinent questions. My family has previously adopted one of the puppies from Mariposa's "El Refugio" within this past year and has given it a loving home . This puppy has caused my daughter thousands of pesos in medical care and medications for a skin disease that she has had since birth. Several times she was advised to "put the puppy down". However she has persevered and the puppy although not healthy is improving.
I give lots of credit to those who work with the animals and save many lives, as well as the spay & neuter clinic who keep the population of the local animals down. However in my personal case it did not help these puppies at all.We ended up taking them to the animal shelter outside of la Paz (Baja Dogs in Centenario). We had to pay for the "moquillo" test ($180 pesos each) to make sure that they were healthy enough to accept. They passed and were lovingly taken in by the attendants there. My daughter reported that it is a very clean facility. They have 3 has. that was donated to them. I am writing this article just to let you know my experience. - Dale Townsend, milagrodale (-at-) yahoo.com

Thanks especially to Nancy and Aaron whose dedication never ends. Thanks to Tom Carroll who had the winning ticket and donated all his prize money back to us.
And a special thanks to generosity of the community members who attended the show on Friday night! We were able to raise $5800 pesos which is already being put to good use helping needy children and families in the area. - , elenazencio (-at-) hotmail.com
Selling Booze at Events (Courtesy Baja Pony Express) - It is my understanding that you MUST have a permit to be able to sell booze at ANY event that you sponsor. This includes non-profit organizations. This is true even if you hold the event at your home. You cannot sell booze without a permit. We will be discussing this issue at the next COORDINATING COUNCIL meeting to be held on April 7th. At some point, we may need to have the chief of police come to a meeting and explain to us what the requirements are to hold an event by a non profit organization. - Jim stanbaja (-at-) yahoo.com

Visit Mexico's Copper Canyon, May 18-26, 2009 - Todos Santos resident and eco-adventure guide Sergio Jauregui is organizing this trip for Baja residents to explore Mexico's answer to the Grand Canyon, Barranca del Cobre, Copper Canyon. The Copper Canyon is home to some of the most spectacular and stunning natural scenery in Mexico's inland territory. Deeper, longer – in fact seven times larger - than the Grand Canyon, the Copper Canyon is actually 20 canyons carved out of the Sierra Madre Occidental by at least six different rivers. The Tarahumara people, descendants of the Aztecs and fabled long-distance runners, live a simple life in these canyons that has remained largely unchanged for centuries. To learn more about this area and obtain a detailed itinerary please contact Todos Santos Eco Adventures. - Sergio Jauregui, TSEcoAdventures (-at-) hotmail.com, www.tosea.net, 14-50189; 044-612-1613208, Todos Santos
