Image Hosting and Creative Services - Beginning this month, the Baja Western Onion will offer image hosting and creative services. We have had many requests from readers and advertisers to host their graphics on our server and include them in issues of the Baja Western Onion. We were unable to provide this service before, but now we can for a small fee.

If you would like us to host your web-ready image or banner ad and include it in the Baja Western Onion, the fee is $5 per issue. Banner ads should be in JPG or GIF format at 72 dpi resolution, and no larger than 600 pixels wide by 120 pixels high, or 400 pixels high and 200 pixels wide, and the total file size should be no larger than 50 KB. If you also need help creating or editing your ad, we can now offer this service as well. Working from your copy and ideas, banner ads typically take two to three hours to create and upload, and will be billed at the rate of $25 per hour. If you also need a web page to link from your ad, let us know. You can see some examples of our work in this issue. Contact Debra Webster at Debra [-at-], 530 903 4257 (US).

Solar Power 2008 Expo - San Diego, October 13 thru 16 - As you know, many homes here in Baja are "off the grid" and require solar power. Sunshine is plentiful here so solar power is a good match. If you have an interest in learning more about solar energy (photovoltaics, concentrating photovoltaics, solar thermal electric or solar hot water), this event has something to offer. There will be 400+ exhibitors and 60+ conference sessions to learn about the latest technology happenings in the solar power industry.

The Conference will be free to the general public on one evening, Wed. Oct. 15th from 5:30pm-8:30pm. For more information on the conference, visit:

Turtle Nesting Season Begins & Young Green Turtle Found Dead - Wednesday, June 4, Vigilantes German Agundez and Jorge Marquez were checking a reported turtle track, when German saw a young Green Sea Turtle on the beach at Punta Lobos. The turtle had been cut open and was dead. There was also the track of an Olive Ridley who didn't make a nest. This "false crawl" is evidence that our sea turtle nesting season has begun.

Now is the time to turn off exterior lighting at night, and stop driving on our beaches. Even if you live in town turning off exterior lights will reduce the "glow" of the town at night which inhibits nesting. Please visit our website for more information on sea turtles in the area, and if you see nesting activity or turtle tracks please contact one of us.

Ferry Information Web Site (courtesy, Baja Pony Express) - There is a web site on line, that tells you all the information on traveling to and from mainland Mexico to Baja on the ferry. There you will find contact info. If you are thinking of taking the ferry it would be a good idea to familiarize yourselves with this site. Click on 'CONTACTO', and there you will see the phone numbers. The country code is 52. It has been my experience that you should dial the regular number as the toll free numbers do not work from USA. -

Got Graffiti? Got Paint? Got $? - Hopefully many of you read the article in the May edition of El Calendario that explains in full about the anti-graffiti project The Palapa Society began over Semana Santa. If not, the issue is still around town. Perhaps you noticed that some prominent walls (mostly in el otro lado) were painted-over with grey paint during the two week holiday. We have The Palapa Society’s scholarship students and students visiting from the United States with the organization Rustic Pathways to thank.

Research proves that there is a clear correlation between graffiti and crime. Whatever your feelings about graffiti art, you can not deny, this in not art, this is tagging, pure and simple, without any creative inspiration or message. If you feel strongly that kids have the right to tag, well then feel free to offer a wall on your property or organize with the town municipal a designated spot. I am not interested in getting into a debate about the merits of graffiti and self expression. But for many in town, the graffiti is an eyesore and something, we believe, when left unaddressed only lends strength, purpose, and a canvas for more.

School is almost out for the kids here and the summer “Surf and Service” program with Rustic Pathways will be starting in two weeks. We will once again be grouping Palapa Society scholarship kids with Rustic Pathways kids and setting them to work together to tackle the graffiti. Not only are we beautifying the town, but also, we are bridging peers from either side of “the border” and how worthwhile is that!

Many of you have mentioned to Tim Doyle that you believe in the project and want to support the program with paint or money. We did not raise as much money as we had hoped for the Día del Tambo and would really love to take you up on your offers to help. If you would like to donate unused paint (which we can mix together to make grey) or money, please contact Tim Doyle at timsudoyle [-at-] Thank you in advance for your support of this new program and for your continued support of The Palapa Society of Todos Santos on a whole. Have a great summer! - Jennifer Rosen, timsudoyle [-at-], palapasociety [-at-], 145-0299, Todos Santos

La Paz Policia - Last week, as I was driving 100 K down the carretera, just outside of La Paz, on my way back to Pescadero, I was pulled over by the police. There was no question that I was speeding, and since I was the only one around I couldn't even point to all the other speeders. I speak some Spanish and I politely tried to explain a few lame excuses to the policeman. He was also polite to me and used our interaction to try to educate me about the horrible accidents on the carretera due to high speeds. He wanted my driver's license explaing to me that I had 10 days to come to an office somewhere? to pay a fine and retrieve my license. He also said he would give me a document to show any other policeman where my license was, so I wouldn't get into trouble for not having a license. Just as I thought he was going to walk off and "write the ticket", he handed me back my license and cautioned me to be careful and drive more slowly. This policeman was very professional, polite and respectful by anyone's standards. I too was respectful and I did my best to communicate in Spanish. [At one point I called a traffic light a match --samafaro/fosforo (sp)] We both laughed at that. Anyway, thought I'd send in a good story about the police since we all seem so anxious to complain about them. - Hollygarci [-at-], Pescadero

Flight Information - I'm looking for flight information from La Paz or Cabo to Tijuana and then the bus service from Tijuana to Downtown San Diego. Any information is much appreciated. - Rick Plaia, rickplaia [-at-], 6121538124, Todos Santos
