The Baja Western Onion Needs Your Help - As many of you know, The Baja Western Onion has been produced and funded entirely by volunteers since its start 18 months ago. We had no idea at that time how popular the Onion would become, and we hear from many of you how much you rely on the BWO to keep you connected and informed; no matter where you are in Mexico, the U.S. or Canada.

We like to think of the Baja Western Onion as a community service not unlike public radio or TV. In the same way, the Onion depends on community involvement and support for its success - we could not produce it without your articles and ads. We are often asked by our readers how they can contribute in other ways to support our volunteer efforts. Up until now we’ve been reluctant to accept donations, but as the Onion continues to grow, we find we’re faced with mounting costs and effort to support and improve the Onion. So, like public radio and TV, we’re now asking for your support in order to help cover a portion of the costs to provide this community service. If you’ve benefited in any way at all by reading or posting in the Baja Western Onion, we hope you’ll consider a pledge to help support it.

We’d welcome any amount you can afford, but we suggest you consider an annual pledge of $18 as a starting point. That’s only five cents a day for fresh community news and events delivered instantly to your E mail box each week. Because our readership is online, we’ve set up an account online at PayPal to make it easy to send your support. You do not need a PayPal account to donate via PayPal. If you’ve never used PayPal before, it’s convenient , quick, safe and secure.

We can also accept your donation by check, or direct deposit. For more information, please visit our web site at http://www.BajaWesternOnion.com/donate.asp. As always, thank you for your continued support of the Baja Western Onion. – Alan Thompson, Debra Webster and Maryann Douglas.

News and Events

Progress Of Juan And His Family - To all of you who have donated time and funds for Juan and his family, here is a recent update from their friends. "We went to see Juan yesterday. He is looking better except for his third toe on his left foot which is black and hard. Unfortunately, we suspect it may have to be amputated. Hopefully, if this is the case, they do so before gangrene can set in. Peep (Juan's son) has been released from the hospital. The surgery on both legs was successful. Due to the location of the breaks in both legs, mid thigh, he will have to remain bedridden for a while. Juan's daughter, Alondra, is still in the hospital. The titanium plate and screws are visible and her arm is in traction. Juan asked that we tell everyone he sincerely appreciates and is so grateful for all that everyone has done for him and his family. He can't tell you enough how much it is appreciated.

Should you wish to donate funds to Juan and family please do so in his full name: Jose Antonio Aviles Salvatierra at the Todos Santos Bancomer bank, account number: 1231047361. Here's the information needed to wire funds from outside of Mexico,

Is There A U.S. Notary Public - here in the Todos Santos / Pescadero area? - Jane, jasi57( -a t- )juno.com, 145-0110

Sewage Solution? - A few issues back, the Gringo Gazette published an article about a Pescadero resident, Kay Scorah, who funded (and helped build) a dry compost toilet (DCT) at the Pescadero skate park. No septic, no sewage, no smell, no water, and it produces compost you can use in your garden. That might be a good long-term solution for some of you folks worried about this situation and about your water in general. I can email interested parties a copy of the article, which includes contact information for Kay and the Mexico City guys she brought over to build the toilet. - lindsey( -a t- )gringogazette.com

Another DirectTV Problem - Is anyone else having this problem with Direct? My two boxes are saying that there is a new softwear update that needs downloading, but the download can't be processed. I keep getting a message to push the re-set button and try again. These are brand new boxes, purchased just this last February. Before I try and work thru the problem with Direct, has anyone else had this problem or know how it can be resolved? Could it be that I need to try a larger dish? Any suggestions would be appreciated so I can get all of my five stations back! - Bill Kramer, bajabk( -a t- )yahoo.com, 145-0580

Tires - Can anyone recommend a good place to buy new tires ( preferably in La Paz) that can install and do wheel allignments? - Isabel, 612 104 6042

Anyone Heading North This Week? - I have a piece of mail that needs to get into the United States Postal Service system as soon as it can. - Jane Sipe, jasi57( -a t- )juno.com, 145-0110
